With Rayon Sports match set for this Sunday, what should GorMahia do to ensure they get a positive result away It was joy and jubilation when Gor Mahia eliminated South African side SupeSport United from Caf Confederation Cup.
Things have not been easy for the Dylan Kerr led side; after winning the Kenyan Premier League, the first assignment was to go past Equatorial Guinea side Leones Vegetarianos. That was a relatively easier assignment for the Kenyan side. After winning the first leg by two goals, a one all draw away ensured progression.
Esperance was the next hurdle for the Green Army, unfortunately it did not go as planned. After a barren draw at home, the Kenyan side fell away by a solitary goal, and was relegated to the final round of Caf Confederation Cup where they had to face last year's finalists SuperSport United.
A 1-0 win at home coupled with a 2-1 defeat away in Pretoria led to a 2-2 aggregate and Gor Mahia progressed to the Group stages where they were drawn to face Rwanda's Rayon Sports, Young Africans from Tanzania and North African side USM Alger from Algeria.
With Rayon Sports match set for this Sunday, what should Gor Mahia do to ensure they get a positive result away? In these kind of competitions, most teams give everything at home to get maximum points.
Rayon will not be an exception, they will want to start their campaign on a high note. Gor Mahia has not won any away match this season, they drew 1-1 against Vegetarianos, lost 1-0 against Esperance, and finally fell 2-1 to SuperSport United. K'Ogalo has to forget their last two results and focus on how to get at least a draw against Rayon. A point away in the group stages is a decent result.
It is hard to create chances when playing away, because on most occasions, the home team presses harder leaving no open spaces for the visiting side. However, at times, mistakes do happen and chances do come by. Gor Mahia has players, who can create scoring opportunities, the best they can do is to hit the back of the net.
Getting a goal means the home team will have to start thinking on how to recover, and as a result they will make more mistakes. No team can be perfect on the pitch, at times things may just go bad, but that does not mean mistakes cannot be minimized.
Every department has to do its job perfectly, from the striking force all the way to the defense. Strikers have to stop the defenders from giving support, while the defenders have to do their job at the back. The goalkeeper has to know when to release the ball fast and when to cool down the pressure.
