The new Kilimanjaro Marathon route has just been measured and ratified and looks to be an improvement on the previous routes. The new route is no longer an out and back route, it’s a continuous circuit which should help with traffic and congestion issues.

The route was measured and ratified yesterday by Hugh Jones , Secretary of Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) , assisted by Michael Hughes of the Nairobi Marathon , Ibrahim Hussein of IAAF, and John Bayo of the Kilimanjaro Marathon Club.

Commenting about the new route, Hugh Jones , Secretary of Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) said: “It is an astonishingly beautiful course. Right after the half marathon start and entering the second half of the marathon, runners will be probably be concentrating on getting the climbing done.

This part of the course is testing but there is plenty of crowd support. As spectators thin out the countryside becomes more noticeable and more beautiful. There are coffee plantations, vivid greenery and if you glance upwards spectacular views of Kilimanjaro.”

He added that “the off-road section comes at the highest point of the course where runners dip down to cross a ravine, then climb up heavily forested slopes to rejoin the tarmac with 11.5km to run. It’s a gentle downward slope nearly all the way and although your back is now turned to the mountain the views remain impressive.

Re-entering Moshi town runners pass under protective canopy of trees as they approach the stadium. Stadium finish is always uplifting for tired runners. And when you cross the line and turn around, the view of Mount Kilimanjaro reminds you why you came here.”

John Addison, the Managing Director of Wild Frontiers said the new route which was unveiled recently will prove to be popular, and runs through some beautiful forests and farming areas. The new routes are designed to improve traffic flow and give runners more comfort and enjoyment at this year’s race which is scheduled to take place in Moshi on 2nd March, 2014.

He added that the Full Marathon starts at 6.30 am from the MUCCoBS stadium while the half marathon will start on Sokoine Road outside MUCCOBS gate at 7am and will finish in the stadium. The Gapco Disabled 10km Marathon which has wheelchair and handcycle categories only starts at 6.45 from MUCCoBS. The Vodacom 5km Fun Run will start at 7.45 am at the YMCA roundabout. All events finish at MUCCoBS.

Executive Solutions are local coordinators of the Kilimanjaro Marathon 2014 in conjunction with AT, Kilimanjaro Athletics Association, and Kilimanjaro Marathon Club. The race is sponsored by Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, Vodacom Tanzania, GAPCO, Simba Cement, and KK Security among others, Keys Hotel, TPC Sugar, TanzaniteOne, CMC Automobiles Ltd, RwandAir, FNB Tanzania, UNFPA and Kilimanjaro Water.
